TODAY'S PROJECT

Today I (kind of) completed a project that has been needed for many months now. I have a crawl space under my house. The primary access door is in great shape but the secondary access door (so secondary that I have never used it) had literally rotted off its hinges, making it convenient access mostly fer critters. Here's what it looked like before.

Yuck!

Yesterday I went to Lowe's at lunch and purchased the $15 worth of lumber and hardware necessary to replace this myself. After a short time spent sawing and hammering here is the new improved access door.

OK, so it still needs to be primed and painted, but the basics are completed. Really this was a simple thing but everytime I do something like this I get a huge feeling of accomplishment! I really like being self-sufficient. Some folks I know wonder why I do things myself. I'll tell you. 1. It's cheaper. I could have hired someone to do this for $75 or $100 but easily did it myself for $15 (and enough lumber left over to knit a pair of socks)! 2. Because I have half a brain and I had half an hour. 3. Because I really like the fact that I can do things like this.

Wanna see some killer tomato plants?

I'm using my Earthbox for them this year (www.earthbox.com) because the stupid black walnut tree in my backyard is so toxic it's hard to plant any veggies anywhere near the house. I would love to have it removed (no, that is NOT a DIY project!) but it is a bit cost-prohibitive.

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!

I love your DIY chip! HOWEVER, let's not forget your tiling project from a few years back. I saved your emails because they cracked me up so much.

EMAIL #1: PLEASE ALL NOTE: I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY EYEBALLS CHEWED OUT BY CHIPMONKS THAN EVER TAKE ON ANOTHER
TILING PROJECT.

EMAIL #2: I would rather re-marry JG than go through another tiling project.

FINAL EMAIL: I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY [femaale body part that rhymes with Doris] CHEWED OFF BY RABID SKUNK THAN TAKE ON ANOTHER TILING PROJECT!

Ah, anonymous blogger comment leaver (whose initials are probably SWA or PWB or possibly PS), how cruel to keep emails from TWO YEARS AGO!!!

I must fill in the casual reader about the infamous tiling project of May 2004. I did fully intend to do this myself. I purchased the supplies, the tools, and the tiles. I spent days measuring and laying out and marking and nipping tiles to fit my bathroom floor. In the end it was overwhelming and indeed, I broke down and paid a wonderful tile man to do it right, with tile board underneath and everything. It was well worth the small price he charged (and it was a small price) and I have never regretted it.

The lesson is this: If you think you can do it, challenge yourself and do it. If at any point you decide your work will be utter crap do indeed hire a professional and then watch and learn.

I will shamefully admit that since the infamous tiling project of May 2004 was completed I have yet to replace the moulding in said bathroom. Said moulding is not just at the baseboards but it also runs up the various vertical inside and outside corners. I only removed the base moulding but of course once the floor was raised by the width of the backer board and tile I realized ALL the moulding would have to come off and be re cut to size and then re installed. I am soooo ashamed. Perhaps I will do that this weekend and have the damned thing over and done.
